Back In 2016, We Came Up With A Simply Concept Of Selling Hats With A Few Blank Hats We Had Laying Around. After A Couple Of Months Of Prepping And Thinking Of What To Make With The Hats And What Name We Will Call Our Project, We Came Up With An Idea Of Making Hats Of New York City With A Twist. However, We Decided To First Test The Waters By Making Our First Hats From Where We Come From DYCKMAN NYC, Our Idea Was Simple, “Dyckman” In Graffiti At The Front And A Patch On The Side (House Logo) Of The Hat, We Added “DYCKMAN CITY CO. “ As A Fictitious Name And Not Use The Official Brand Name We Thought Of Previously. However, When We Arrived At The Embroidery Shop The Owner Insisted That The Patch On The Side Should Be At The Front Because It Was Very Detailed And Had A Lot Of Meaning Behind It. (check out the logo meaning underneath) That Actually Made Us Decide To Make Dozens Of Hats In Both Styles (House Logo On The Front And Graffiti Letters On The Front) We Also Knew We Had To Come Up With Something To Grab Peoples Attention So They Can Buy These Hats, We Decided To Make A Video Ad Showing The Hats But Also To Show Where We Come From, We Added Some Old Footages We Found Of People That Were/Are From The Neighborhood And Also Small Clips Of The Culture And Lifestyle Of The Neighborhood. We Launched it On A Couple Of Social Media Platforms And We Couldn’t Imagine The Reception It Had, The Hats Sold Out In Less Than A Week And We Had To Make Dozens More Right Away! However, What Was Truly Remarkable To Us Was Not The Sells And The Demand, It Was What The Video Ended Up Starting. Many People Emailed, Messaged, Called, Texted, Private Messages Us ... Thanking Us, Telling Us How That Ad Inspired Them To Start Their Own Projects Of Dyckman. That Ad Inspiration Has Led To Animations, Documentaries, Short Films, Videos, Art Ect. Some Of These Projects Are In The Works And Some Are Already Around Today, We Honestly Never Imagine We Would Inspire Anyone And Yet Alone It Has Also Connected Us To Other Talented, Creative And Inspiring People From Our Own Neighborhood. It’s A Blessing And A Truly Humbling Experience For Us. All Of It Led To Us Rethinking What We Had Made And What We Originally Planned To Make, With That In Mind We Decided To Scratch Our Original Project. And We Took That Fictitious Name Of Dyckman City Co. And Made It Into A Legit Brand/Company “Dyckman City Company LLC”. To Think We Started With A Small Trial Concept Of Hats With A Made Up Name. To Now Becoming A Legit Company And Taking The Company To The Next Level. We As A Company Now Blog About Dyckman, Fight For The Community, We Help Out Local Businesses, Companies, Brands, Artists, Causes, To Say The Least, We Have Also Sponsored Athletes, Media Productions And Artists. We As A Company And Members Of This Community Support Dyckman City Any Way We Can And We Aspire To Reach More Ventures As The Company Continues To Grow.
Just Like Other Places Throughout New York City We Have Areas That Have Their Own Nicknames And/Or Identities. For Example, Harlem World, Tribeca, Soho, Dumbo, The Bridge Ect. However, For Dyckman This Starts Way Back When, Around The Late 1980s - Early 1990s The Term “Dyckman City” Was Probably Used By Minimal To Virtually No One, When We First Remember Hearing The Term "Dyckman City" It Was By A Relative And His Friends, They Stated That They Were From “Dyckman City“ This Was Back in The Early 1990s. The Term Made A True Impact On Us And It Stuck With Us. We Started Using The Term Loosely Amongst Each Other And We Noticed The Term Started To Spread And Catch On Thoughout The Years Around The Neighborhood. In The Early 1990s The Neighborhood Wasn't As We Know It Today. It Wasn’t Nearly As "Diverse" And Socially Rich Like Outsiders View It. The Dyckman Neighborhood Was a Neighborhood Ran By Drugs In Almost Every Street Corner, Turf Wars And Gang Wars Were Inevitable, Crime Was A Normal Occurrence Back Then, Drug Addicts Were Found Sleeping In The Streets, A Lot Of Businesses Were Either Closed For Years Or Just Run Down. The Biggest And Fanciest Dining Spot We Had Was Called "The Mirage Restaurant". And There Were Less Than A Handful Of Clubs. This Was An Era When Rent Was Low And Social Class Was To A Minimal. Fireworks Ran Throughout The Whole Summer And Drinking Beer In The Streets Was Legal As Long As It Was Concealed Inside A Brown Paper Bag, Block Parties And Festivals Were An Annual Occurrence All Summer. The 9 Train Ran Next To The 1 Train But Rarely Stopped At The Dyckman St. Station.. Train Lights Used To Slightly Turn Off Under Tunnels And Graffiti Was Still The Majority Of The Artwork We Saw. This Was An Era When Kids Actually Played In The Streets From Day to Night And With $1 They Could've Bought A Whole “Dinner” From Their Closes Bodega Or Candy Store. It Was An Era That Wasn't Perfect In Anyway Like Most Neighborhoods Aren't But Was Perfect To Most Who Lived In The Neighborhood , The Cultural Bond Was Strong, We Had Our Own Identity And We Made It Work ... However, Around The Mid To Late 2000s Dyckman Gradually Started Becoming A Different Neighborhood, With Unique Businesses Popping Up And Now Running The Show, Diversity Started Spreading, The True Culture And Community Bond Started Fading, Now The Revenues And Rents Are At Their All Time High, The Neighborhood We Once Had Its Slowly Being Driven Towards Another Direction. Residents That Had Lived Here For Years, (The Majority Immigrants A Few Generations In), Slowly Have Left And Are Being Pushed Out Or Kicked Out. This Neighborhood Is A Far Cry To What It Used To Be. “Dyckman City” Is The Term We Used To Define Our Forgotten Neighborhood, The Forgotten Part Of Manhattan That Everyone Once Saw As Slum But We (The Neighborhood Natives) Saw As Our Paradise And Today Everyone Seems To Want A Piece Of Our Paradise Too. This Is A Placed We Loved And Valued While Others Just Ignored It And Ridiculed It But Now They Seem To Want What We Always Had And Cherished, They Want To Cherished It But Change It To Their Own Likings And Get Rid Of What Once Made It Great. That's Why We Chose To Keep This Name Alive, To Represent Our Neighborhood Then, Now And Forever, For Past Generations And Future Generations To Always Value, This Company Was Founded By People Who Have Lived In The Neighborhood For More Than 30 Years (Born And Raised) And Have Never Left. Even Though We Could've Left Like A Lot Of People That Have Left By Choice, We Chose To Stay Put In Our Home “Dyckman City” This Is Our Neighborhood, Our Culture And Our Identity. The Company's Name Is Far More Than A Brand It's A Cause And A Statement, For Us To Start Preserving Our Culture And Keep What Made Us Great And Unique Alive In Our Community That Unfortunately It Is Slowly Losing Its Identity. Our Mission Is To Not Let The Real Dyckman City Be Forgotten!
